The North Face nasce nel 1964 dalla voglia di due amici di trasformare la fervente passione per la montagna in un negozio di abbigliamento. Sono il miliardario ecologista Douglas Tompkins e Kenneth Klopp.
Appassionati entrambi di escursionismo optano per il nome in questione, The North Face, perchè come è noto i grandi alpinisti per le loro sfide più estreme hanno sempre scelto cime del Nord. Più fredde e difficili da conquistare.
Però si sa, a volte, il destino e la vita ci regalano storie senza logica, ma forse, belle proprio per questo. Il brand infatti deve la sua nascita ad un ambiente poco congeniale ad un alpinista: la spiaggia.

Questo logo ritrae il famoso Half Dome, situato nel parco nazionale di Yosemite. Alta quasi 2700 metri, rappresenta forse la cima più granitica al mondo che se guardata di profilo appare come tagliata a metà di netto. Pazzesco.
Il grafico ha poi usato due colori; il rosso e il Nero. Il rosso per rappresentare passione e coraggio, il nero per l'eleganza e il dominio.
Ma chi pensa che The North Face sia semplicemente un brand di moda è fuori strada, è un progetto pioneristico, attivo su più fronti, sopratutto quello ambientale e innovativo.
Il cardine di questo progetto è il produrre abbigliamento tecnico eliminando la quantità maggiore di materiale. Con lo slogan 'Never Stop Exploring' il marchio sancisce definitivamente la sua volontà di voler essere il brand di abbigliamento outdoor più importante del mondo.
Abbigliamento studiato per tenere caldo, per essere comodo e, perchè no, bello.
L'azienda investe molto nell'innovazione e anche nella sponsorizzazione di atleti poco conosciuti ai più (non sono di certo Cristiano Ronaldo) ma delle vere e proprie icone nel mondo dell'Alpinismo.
A nostro avviso la vera forza e bellezza del brand è che è riuscita negli anni a sdoganare l'abbigliamento tecnico da montagna e portarlo in città, nella vita di tutti i giorni.
The North Face sta pian piano acquisendo posizioni importanti anche tra chi di montagna sa poco, ma veste casual.
Il marketing è una delle forze del brand, che vuole clienti eticamente responsabili.
Così si crea cultura, anche nel vestirsi.
