Sebago was born in Westbrook, Maine (USA), in 1946. Daniel J. Wellehan, owner of 5 shoe shops in the area, decided to found his own factory.
Sebago-Moc was born from the partnership with two local footwear industrialists, William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau. The name is inspired by the nearby Sebago Lake, which in the Abenaki Indian language means "elongated water basin". The same year the first moccasin was born, the famous penny loafer, hand-sewn according to indigenous tradition, still one of the brand's best sellers today.
The first sailing shoe dates back to 1948, but the patent was sold to Uniroyal. In 1950 Sebago-Moc reached a turnover of 1 million dollars and, in 1952, daily production rose to 2000 pairs of shoes: a new factory was built. In 1965 the company also began selling in Europe, thanks to the partnership with the entrepreneur Francisco Gaudier. In 1963 the production of women's footwear began; in 1970 the Docksides® sailing model was launched on the market, another best seller of the brand. On this occasion, the company name was simplified to Sebago®. In 1978 Ted Turner, founder of CNN and a great sailing enthusiast, agreed to combine his image with that of the Docksides® line.
The Campsides® outdoor line also debuted in 1981. In 1984 Sebago® was the first American company to sponsor a boat in the O-Star Race. Other important sponsorships linked to the world of sailing follow, including the Celebrity Regatta, the America's Cup, the Liberty Cup and that of the Young America team in the Louis Vuitton Cup 96/97. The Drysides® line of waterproof shoes was launched in the autumn of 1994. Towards the end of the Nineties the company went through a period of crisis, which culminated in 2003 with the acquisition of Sebago® by the American Wolverine World Wide, Inc.
On 31 July 2017 the brand entered the BasicNet Group's brand portfolio. Today the Sebago® brand is distributed in 90 markets around the world.
