The monumental Treves de' Bonfili Park, the first park to be designed in the city of Padua, is a significant work designed by Giuseppe Jappelli, built along the Venetian walls of Cinquecento, one of the first notable testimonies of the spread of the English garden in Veneto. The Venetian architect and engineer Giuseppe Jappelli, between 1829 and 1835, designed the garden for a private owner, sharing his progressive ideas, his references Freemasons and his pro-French sensibility. The monumental park constitutes the ultimate synthesis between eighteenth-century refinement and the emergence of
new romantic spirit that was spreading precisely in those years: all the elements yes
intertwine seemingly randomly, in a succession of climbs, descents, avenues and paths e
are combined, with the typical eclectic taste of the time, neoclassical buildings, ruins
medieval ones, Chinese pagodas and other imaginative ones architectural inventions, such as a newsstand with caryatids, the gardener's house no more accessible from the garden, a stone tribune of Nanto, and also the Ice House, a particular one construction located under the Corinthian temple equipped with a tunnel that connects the park to
cellars of the former Treves palace. In 1942 a part of the buildings (the caves, the Chinese pagoda, 2 small bridges and the steps of the riding school) were destroyed and the trees cut down and all this caused an upheaval in the structure originally from the Jappellian project. The park in 1954 was taken over by Municipality of Padua which, after an essential accommodation, opened it to the public. The Treves garden has been the subject, starting from 1995, of a major restoration, which he did re-emerge the original structure of the landscape composed by Jappelli. With the restoration we wanted to identify the ancient walkways, artefacts and finds ornamental, as well as restoring the original arboreal and shrubby structure. They have been reported the flooring of the greenhouse in the light palm trees, the horsewoman, the tribune, the pier, the foundations of the house of fisherman.
